Case Study
providing one of the world’s best high-quality fiber and oil crop, serving as one of the largest raw material supplies in the textile industry. Yield monitoring is an important parameter to evaluate cotton productivity during cotton harvest.
The study is an attempt to estimate the cotton crop production, at the taluk level, using data from Multi-Spectral Instrument (MSI) onboard Sentinel-2 and Sentinel-1 satellite data. The study was carried out in Vijapur and Visnagar taluka, Mehsana district, in the Gujarat state during the cotton growing season 2019. Spectral signatures & temporal profiles of vegetation indices have helped the identification of cotton crop grown under irrigated conditions.
Supervised digital image classification of MSI data, acquired at the time of flowering and boll development stage (2019) of cotton crop, gave an overall classification accuracy of 84.27 % and overall accuracy of 86.94 % was obtained. Cotton crop yield map, prepared for the study area, showed cotton yields varying from 1200 to 2600 kg/ha of irrigated cotton.
